Part cleromancy, part cartomancy, the Caster's Sortilege combines charm casting with card divination. The inspiration for this project happened while walking in Chicago. I saw a card image pasted on a brick wall that you could scan to receive your fortune. I loved the fate aspect of it as well as the creativity. This deck has transformed several times in the past year and a half and what you see before you has almost evolved in its own way without really knowing what was coming next.
Originally I had created some casting boards and then cards to coincide with one of the boards. You may use the cards as a standalone method of divination, or add in the charms to cast directly onto your reading to add more dimension. The charms are based off talismans, amulets and symbols used in folk magic. I created some spreads you can try out with your deck and charms which you can also use to build spells. These spreads include: The Wheel of the Year The Wyrd Sisters Crossroads Ing-Rune
You can use this set in many ways: 1) Shuffle the deck and draw cards at random for a reading or use in a spread. For more depth, cast your lots onto your reading. 2) Draw specific cards in relation to your inquiry and cast your lots onto your spread to gain more insight/guidance. You can also choose specific charms to pinpoint your inquiry even further. 3) Roll the dice to choose how many cards/charms you draw then follow #1 or #2 above. 4) Draw any number of cards/charms and use a pendulum to isolate certain areas or help you glean information. 5) Look at the numerology of the card numbers. Add them together, look for patterns, repeating numbers etc. 6) Use the dice to draw specific numbered cards ex) roll the dice twice and add up the numbers rolled. 7) Roll the dice to determine timing like hours or months etc. 8) Use the dice combined with a nearby book to read a specific sentence to add to your reading. Ex) roll the dice once to pick a book from a shelf or pile, 2 or 3 more times added for page number and then once or twice more for the number of lines down the page. Then read the first sentence. 9) Use this system to build a spell for any purpose. Look for charms that fall outside your reading, what ingredients should you use, timing, objective, etc. 10) Use planetary magic squares to draw cards/charms with intention. 11) Create a sigil then place it over any number of cards to see patterns emerge or points of significance.
