Cunning people who used to be the village healers, wise folk and practiced magic and divination, were an important part of life in the Middle Ages.  Often they lived on the outskirts of town and liked to keep to themselves.  Later, when there was a negative connotation attached to the term 'witch' as someone who should be feared, did people turn against those who they relied on for help in scary situations.  Witches today are still those supportive and knowledgeable people who love to help others in need.  You can seek guidance and advice, and effective solutions to everyday issues.  They may be the friendliest people you meet and if you are nice to them in return, you might receive a gift.
